2020-W Quarter Value & V75 Privy Mark Identification Guide

On the 2020 obverse, inspect the area below Washington’s neck near the date. A genuine W places the coin in the West Point issue family. P and D examples from the same year are normal Philadelphia and Denver circulation coins.

The W is only the first check. A 2020 circulation W quarter should also have the V75 privy mark. Use magnification and side light, but do not scratch or polish the mint-mark area.

V stands for Victory and 75 marks the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II. The U.S. Mint designed the symbol inside an outline inspired by the Rainbow Pool at the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.

The mark is a deliberate commemorative feature on the 2020-W America the Beautiful circulation quarters. Keep the terms separate: W identifies the mint, while V75 identifies the privy-mark program.

Normal P and D issues were produced in much larger circulation quantities. The W/V75 allocation was intentionally small and distributed inside bulk bags, creating a collector hunt. That does not mean every W quarter survived in pristine condition or that every coin has the same premium.

Mintage is not surviving population. Certified population is not total surviving population either. PCGS population reports count coins graded by PCGS, not every coin that still exists in change, rolls or private collections.

West Point struck the W/V75 quarters. The Philadelphia and Denver Mints then mixed the privy-marked pieces into bulk bags of P and D quarters. Those bags went to Federal Reserve Banks for distribution directly to banks and financial institutions. The U.S. Mint stated that the bulk bags containing privy-marked quarters would not go to coin dealers.

This route explains why the coins can show bag marks, transport marks or circulation wear. It also explains the appeal of searching change rather than looking for a normal collector roll sold at the Mint.

The W/V75 coins were intentionally released into circulation, so historic search locations included change, bank rolls, old coin jars and mixed quarter lots. Availability changes by region and time. A circulated example may have passed through bags, banks and several hands before being saved.

2. Find W below Washington’s neck.
3. Find V75 on the obverse.
4. Identify one of the five reverses.
5. Store the candidate by its edge before comparing condition.

PCGS used the 2020 Quarter Quest to recognize qualifying early submissions. First Discovery, First Week of Discovery and Early Find identify timing or provenance associated with a certified coin. They can matter to specialists and explain why two coins with the same numeric grade sold differently.

Do not call a raw coin an Early Find because it was purchased in 2020. Look for the exact designation on a recognized holder and confirm the certification record. The early period does not change the two-million design mintage.

The regular 2020-W V75 circulation quarter uses a copper-nickel clad construction over a copper center. A silver-looking color, a dark edge or a strong ring is not enough to prove a different planchet.

If you suspect a missing clad layer or wrong planchet, preserve the coin, record its weight and diameter, and use professional testing. Do not file or scrape the edge.

PCGS lists the regular 2020-W quarter at 5.67 grams and 24.30 millimeters in diameter with a reeded edge. Weight is useful for screening, not for proving a variety by itself. A dirty scale, a damaged rim or a worn coin can create misleading readings.

Polishing, abrasive cleaning and aggressive dipping can leave hairlines, remove original luster and reduce collector value. The risk is higher on a condition-sensitive W/V75 coin because the surface is part of the grade and the market story.

Handle the coin by the edge, keep it in an inert holder and photograph it before sending it for an opinion. Do not clean a suspected error or pedigree coin.
